“It’s not up to Micah Toub to define masculinity for others. Masculinity is whatever men want it to be and on their own terms.”
A commenter posted this on the comment board to my latest Globe and Mail column, which was about how it’s becoming harder to tell a guy’s sexual orientation when you meet him.
Certainly, I agree with the commenter. It’s not up to me to define masculinity. However, now that he’s brought it up, I want to say I’m also not totally against the idea of taking on this challenge. So, if you are a man walking around without a definition of what it means to be a man, feel free to contact me at the email address listed on this website and I would be happy to send you a definition of masculinity. Please also mention what form you would like this definition to take. The options are: haiku, fortune cookie-style aphorism, knock knock joke, rhyming couplet, or short concrete poem.

I write a blog for Psychology Today that’s something of a continuation of my memoir. A couple months ago, PT asked its bloggers to write up a premise for a sitcom, and mine was one of the ones they chose to highlight in their August print edition, for all their 3 million readers. I’m super…psyched. Anyways, there’s no link to it on their site yet and I’m not sure the issue is even on stands, but I’ll paste the premise here. It was inspired by a column I wrote for the Globe.

DATING UP
An anti-Sex in the City, this show is about four men in their 20s and early 30s – all of them unemployed slackers – who are trying to become the kept men of wealthy women in New York City. Inevitably, one actually falls in love with his sugar mama and must face the realities of a long-term relationship with a woman who supports him. Another starts dating a struggling actress but hides it from his friends, convincing her to pretend she’s a psychiatrist when she’s around them. Humor ensues as age-old assumptions about gender get flipped upside-down each week.

I just spoke to Charles, the events manager at the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver. Very nice, helpful guy! Made me miss my hometown. He says there’s a chance they’ll be able to set up a therapy couch for me at the event. Fingers crossed. Anyways, there’s an events tab above, but I wanted to make a “save the date” announcement here for people who can come to the following. (The book comes out later in Canada, so those events are forthcoming. Also, hopefully more in the U.S., too).

I’ve been annoyed by these Dockers ads around the city for a while and I finally had a chance to vent a little in this thing I wrote for Ryeberg, which went up today.

Yesterday, I received a finished copy of the U.S. version of Growing Up Jung in the mail. I’ve wanted to hold a copy of a finished book of mine since I was 7, so you can imagine it was pretty exciting. As I told my editor, I involuntarily let out a surprisingly girlish squeal.

Hello friends, readers, and accidental visitors,
Welcome to MicahToub.com, a hub site for my writing and various doings. It’s still in the “Beta” stage, so small changes will be occurring for the next while. The site was designed and developed by Claire Graca. Thank you Claire!
